Edgar Rice Burroughs’ brilliant character, Tarzan has been brought to all sorts of entertainment. Possible the best is the Disney classic. Now we come to see this big- budget adventure come to life once again. But, The Legend of Tarzan is painfully bland. Director David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 & 2 and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) should just stick to directing things in the wizarding world because it didn’t feel like he had a grasp about how to tell this jumbled story. I’ve always been intrigued by Tarzan when he’s swinging on vines and yelling his signature yell, but there’s hardly any in this. Even though this story takes place after the events of the first movie I guess and must go back to the Congo to save his wife. This could’ve been a serviceable story but it goes nowhere. Everything leading up to the actual point of the story was insufferable with the pacing. The first two acts were really boring to get through and while the final act brought it up a little bit, it still hasn’t heightened senses. Alexander Skarsgard brought his own in playing Tarzan/ John Clayton III. He has the body and characteristic of the hero. Margot Robbie as Jane was also pretty capable character. After his captivating performance in Inglourious Basterds, Christoph Waltz is being typed casts as a villain that doesn’t live up to the hype. Samuel L. Jackson is such a good actor but he was in a totally different movie throughout. Like his character is alongside with Tarzan but he doesn’t talk like someone in the 1800s. What really was a letdown was the CGI especially with the animals except for the apes for the most part because it was not good. Even the action sequences weren’t anything to get worked up about. Personally, there should’ve been more when he was in the jungle and it’s involved in flashbacks and not just focus on the present. And almost everything else felt so rushed giving not a lot of substance to him as it should’ve been more about him in the past if it made this a better movie as a whole. Didn’t feel like Yates put his all in this project. This should’ve been fun but it wasn’t for a movie involving Tarzan. Not even a Phil Collins song couldn’t save this from being a mess.
The Legend of Tarzan was absolutely nothing but an uninteresting story that’s going for forgettable and boring rather than exciting.
